Mobile sites

Optimizing a website for mobile use (via smartphone or tablet) is about scaling down your usual content so that it’s clear, functional and contains only information that is essential to a mobile user. Mobile phones and smart devices are selling at an unbelievable rate and experts like Deloitte (one of Canada’s leading professional services firms) predict that more than 50 percent of internet use will be mobile-based in 2011. In fact, according to the firm’s 2011 Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT) Predictions, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets will likely sell more than 400 million units in 2011.

Your clients can find you from anywhere

Creating a mobile version of your website will give you access to a rapidly growing market of internet users. Even before the end of 2010, Apples fiscal reports revealed that the company had already sold more than 60 million iPhones worldwide. And according to Gartner Research sales of Android devices surpassed even iPhone sales for the second quarter of 2010. As tablet computers (such as iPads) become more common, mobile use rates are only going to rise. Accommodating these users with a clean, mobile-friendly site will be invaluable as the way we access and use the internet continues to change.

Good design means no waiting

A good mobile site is informative and easy-to-use. Keep in mind that users will not have access to tools such as a mouse. Most mobile users want their information quick and dirty; keep graphics and any tools that will slow loading time to a minimum. Consider what a user on the go is most likely to need or want from your site. The answer will tell you what to include and more importantly, what to leave out.
